Red Stag
Red deer (Cervus elaphus), commonly called red stag when referring to mature males, adapt well to being raised in Texas, particularly on managed ranches with adequate acreage and water. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, they are hardy animals that tolerate a wide range of climates, including the hot summers and variable rainfall found in much of Texas. With proper herd management, supplemental nutrition during dry periods, and parasite control, red stags thrive on improved pastures and native forage, making them a popular and sustainable species in Texas exotic game operations. Males typically stand about 4–5 feet at the shoulder and weigh between 350–600 pounds, with some large stags exceeding 700 pounds. Breeding season, known as the rut, generally occurs in the fall; after a gestation period of about 8 months (around 230 days), females usually give birth to a single calf in late spring.

Red Deer
Red deer (Cervus elaphus) are one of the largest and most widely recognized deer species in the world, native to Europe, western Asia, and parts of North Africa. Highly adaptable, they thrive across a range of environments — from open grasslands to wooded edges — shifting between grazing and browsing with the seasons. Each autumn, red deer enter the rut — a dramatic breeding season defined by dominance, competition, and unmistakable bugling. Stags engage in intense roaring contests, their deep, resonant calls establishing hierarchy and attracting hinds before rivals move to physical confrontation. These vocal displays are both demanding and decisive, with dominant stags often losing significant body weight as they compete, defend territory, and maintain control of their herds.
Red deer adapt well to Central Texas, where open pasture, scattered oaks, and native grasses provide a suitable environment. With reliable access to water and targeted nutritional support during hotter, drier periods, they develop into strong, healthy herds.
At J4 Exotics, red deer roam across open fields, frequent ample water sources, and retreat into dense wooded cover, reflecting their natural behavior. A consistent nutrition program supports impressive antler development, reproductive success, and overall herd vitality.
Powerful, vocal, and steeped in tradition — the red deer brings a timeless presence to the ranch.
