Kudu

Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) are highly adaptable African antelope that do very well when raised in Texas, especially on large ranches. Native to the dry savannas and bushveld of southern and eastern Africa, they are naturally suited to hot climates, low humidity, and rugged terrain — conditions similar to much of Central and South Texas. Kudus are hardy browsers, feeding primarily on shrubs and trees rather than grasses, which makes them compatible with native Texas brush. They are also relatively disease-resistant and require minimal supplemental feeding when properly managed, making them a popular and sustainable exotic species for Texas game ranch operations. Males typically stand about 4–5 feet at the shoulder and weigh between 400–600 pounds, with large spiral horns that can exceed 40 inches in length. Breeding can occur year-round in managed environments like Texas ranches, though there is often a seasonal peak; after a gestation period of about 8 months, females usually give birth to a single calf.

Kudu

The greater kudu (Tragelophus strepsiceros) is one of Africa’s most iconic and sought-after antelope, known for its towering spiral horns and elusive nature — earning it the nickname “Grey Ghost.” Native to the woodlands and bush country of eastern and southern Africa, kudu are highly adapted to semi-arid environments with dense brush and rugged terrain. As browsers, they feed primarily on leaves, shoots, and woody vegetation, requiring little direct water and thriving in landscapes that closely mirror the cedar, live oak, and mixed brush of Central Texas.

Introduced to Texas in the mid-1900s, kudu have established strong populations and remain one of the most desirable species among exotic wildlife programs. Their natural caution, preference for cover, and sensitivity to handling make them both challenging and rewarding to manage — traits that contribute to their value and reputation.

At J4 Exotics, kudu roam freely across varied terrain designed to replicate their native habitat. Creek bottoms, oak-lined draws, and dense brush provide natural cover, while a year-round nutrition program supports health, growth, and horn development at every stage.

And while they are best known for disappearing into the brush, perhaps their most remarkable trait is their athleticism — kudu are capable of clearing fences approaching eight feet from a near standstill, making them one of the most extraordinary high-jumpers in the animal world.

From a distance, they seem to vanish. Up close, there are few animals more striking.
